Born in 1965, Jean-Pierre Gauthier has been active on the contemporary art scene since the mid-1990s. Winner of the prestigious Sobey Art Award in 2004, he is also the recipient of the 2006 Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award and the 2012 Prix Louis-Comtois. His kinetic sound installations have been exhibited across Canada and in Europe, Asia and the United States. Notable group shows include the Montréal Biennale
(2000), Electrohype at Lunds Konsthall in Sweden (2006), Transmediale.06 - Smile Machines at Akademie der Künste in Berlin (2006), Tonspur expanded in Vienna (2010), Manif d’art de Quebec (2012), FIMAV à Victoriaville (2012), File Festival in Sao Paulo (2012) and thingWORLD_International Triennial of New Media art in Bejing (2014). A survey exhibition of his work, Jean-Pierre Gauthier: Machines at Play, was held at Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal in 2007 and toured to the Akron Art Museum, Ohio, the Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax, the Hamilton Art Gallery and the Grande Prairie Art Gallery, Alberta. Jean-Pierre Gauthier is represented by Jack Shainman Gallery, New York.
