Diane Obomsawin

Diane Obomsawin, alias Obom, is a Montreal-based bédéiste and animator. Her comic strips are published in French by L’Oie de Cravan, and in English by Drawn & Quarterly. She has directed several independent animated films along with seven auteur-driven works for the National Film Board of Canada. Her films have been screened at festivals in Quebec, the rest of Canada and around the world, and have earned her prestigious awards including the Grand Prize for Independent Short Animation at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in 2016; the Audience Award at the 2017 L’Alternativa-Barcelona Independent Film Festival; and a Silver Pegasus at the 2013 Animator Festival in Poznan. Her work has been the subject of retrospectives at the International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA), in 2008, and at the Cinémathèque québécoise, in
2016. Over the years, Obomsawin has fashioned a singular brand of storytelling, imbued with humour, humanity and seriousness and often incorporating autobiographical details. In 2012, she also began producing installations, providing a further avenue for anchoring her myths and dream-inspired visions in time and space.
